UNIQLO Malaysia Celebrates 15th Anniversary with RM200,000 Donation for Environmental Conservation
Kuala Lumpur, July 17, 2025 – In celebration of its 15th anniversary in Malaysia, global apparel brand UNIQLO is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability by donating RM200,000 to the Global Environment Centre (GEC). The funds, raised through its paper bag charge initiative, will go toward mangrove rehabilitation efforts in Mersing, Johor.
Protecting the Coast, Greening the Mangroves
This year’s contribution will support:
- The construction of a 100-meter wave breaker in Kampung Tenglu Laut to reduce the risk of coastal erosion and flooding, especially during the East Coast Monsoon season.
- The restoration of one hectare of degraded mangrove forest, involving tree planting and active participation by the local community.
According to GEC Director Faizal Parish, partnerships with companies like UNIQLO are essential for ecosystem restoration and empowering communities.
“This collaboration not only helps us financially but also allows us to engage and educate the local community about the importance of environmental conservation,” he said.
Small Steps, Big Impact
UNIQLO Malaysia’s Director of Sustainability and Corporate Public Relations, Dawn Chow, shared that UNIQLO is always looking for meaningful ways to give back to the community.
“As part of our 15th anniversary celebration in Malaysia, we aim to create long-lasting positive impact for both people and the planet. Mangroves are more than just trees — they’re natural barriers that support biodiversity and protect coastal communities,” she said.
Educating Customers and Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles
Since 2020, UNIQLO has introduced FSC-certified paper shopping bags, sourced responsibly. The RM0.30 charge per bag is part of a broader initiative to reduce single-use plastics and encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags.
In previous years, proceeds from the paper bag charge have supported:
- Reforestation efforts at Taman Tugu and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
- Community-based programmes like Plant Giveaway and Plant & Hunt, designed to get families and communities actively involved in environmental action.
UNIQLO continues to prove that corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability are not just buzzwords, but real, ongoing commitments translated into impactful action. With the support of its customers and the local community, every paper bag purchased is a step toward a greener, more sustainable future.
